On July 24th, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office hosted a “Hot Car Display” at the Fayette County Fair. The Hot Car Display is a program that educates the public about the dangers of leaving children and animals inside vehicles. The high temperature for the day was 82.3 degrees outside the vehicle and 112 degrees inside the vehicle.
Dangers of heatstroke – on average, every 10 days a child dies from heatstroke in a vehicle. In more than half of these deaths, the caregiver forgot the child was in the car. The vehicle can heat up 19 degrees in just 10 minutes, and cracking a window doesn’t help. Create reminders to avoid forgetting your child in the vehicle. A reminder such as leaving a stuffed animal inside the car seat when not in use and placing it in the front passenger seat once you place your child in the car seat. If you see a child alone in the car, call 911.
